Main research activities
Some teachings in Hebrew Bible/Old Testament and Hebrew. The majority of Jewish Studies in the Department falls under the Martin Buber Professorship for Jewish Philosophy of Religion. Its aim is to open up access to the past and present of Judaism to listeners from all faculties, especially students of theology and philosophy, as well as the interested public.
A very wide variety of research and teaching in Jewish Studies as part of this. Research topics include "Religious Positioning: Modalities and Constellations in Jewish, Christian and Islamic Contexts"; "Synagogue Memorial Band Hessen"; "The dead among the living: Jewish mourning practices after the Shoah". Some of the many teaching modules include "Nationalism and Zionism in Jewish Thought of the 19th and 20th Century"; "Philosophy after Auschwitz: Theodor W. Adorno and Hannah Arendt"; "Jewish History in Educational Practice: Approaches and Methods for Mediation Work".
