Awards degrees in Jewish Studies as a sole or major componentBA Jewish Studies: The Jewish Studies department at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität focuses on two main areas: on the one hand, the biblical-Talmudic literature, which has had a decisive influence on Judaism to this day; on the other hand, contemporary Israeli literature, since the founding of the modern state of Israel created a new centre of Jewish life. From these two poles, all themes of Jewish studies can be meaningfully explored. In addition to the study of sources, the focus is on cultural and religious history.

Main research activities
Jewish Studies at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität is geared towards the history of the impact of motifs, characters and themes from the Hebrew Bible in Jewish literature and sees itself as a contribution to a cultural and mental history of Judaism with two main focuses: on the one hand, Talmudic-rabbinical literature , contemporary Israeli literature, on the other hand.
Traditional-religious and secular texts are equally at the center of interest, whereby the Torah and Talmud are brought together from a historical-philological point of view, and (post-) modern literature from a religious-scientific point of view. Because of this profile, interdisciplinary cooperation also plays an important role.
In accordance with the literary and religious studies orientation of Judaic Studies, the learning of languages (Hebrew at its various levels from the Bible to the 21st century, Aramaic and Yiddish) is of considerable importance. The texts are made accessible in seminars and proseminariums from the original languages (namely Hebrew, Aramaic and Yiddish). The lectures are also open to listeners who do not have any knowledge of Hebrew, as translations are used here.
One project that is equally integrated into teaching and research is the Classics of Jewish Literature cycle , which on the one hand comprises a four-semester series of seminars on standard works of Jewish culture (I Antiquity, II Middle Ages, III Enlightenment and Modern Times, IV Israeli Literature ; the Talmudic-rabbinical literature forms an independent learning unit). On the other hand, the classics of Jewish literature are a category that presents fundamental works of Jewish literature from various epochs in the journal Kirche und Israel.
