Main research activities
The staff of the professorship offer a broad program of events on the history of different cultural traditions of Judaism from late antiquity to the present, which is deepened by the exemplary treatment of decisive developments and turning points. With a special focus on religious traditions, Jewish history is viewed on the one hand from the point of view of the complex interaction and confrontation with the surrounding non-Jewish societies. On the other hand, a broad approach to Jewish cultures is pursued both methodologically and in terms of its subjects.
A special focus of research and teaching is in the area of the religious, social and cultural reality of European Judaism from the early modern period, through modern times to contemporary history, with the history of social organization, the Jewish religious philosophy and ethics, the history of mentality and culture as well as the relationship between Jewish and non-Jewish societies as well as topics of anti-Semitism research.
